     “Tehlikeli Oyunlar” is
the story of a Turkish intellectual suffocated by social conventions, the
institution of marriage and fruitless attempts at love. O?uz Atay achieved
putting himself among modernist and post-modernist Turkish literature
precursor. O?uz Atay revolts against to highbrows’ desperation about
traditional social and political institution and backwardness of public with a
huge responsibility and guilt feelings.

          In Tehlikeli Oyunlar, the tattered
consciousness of Hikmet Benol, the novel’s narrator and main character, unfolds
throughout the novel. The desperation of an intellectual living in a third
world country is portrayed in the personality of Hikmet Benol, with all its
dilemmas, impossibilities and delirium.  Oguz Atay uses a stream of
consciousness technique throughout the novel and in using its limited but

     In Tehlikeli Oyunlar, the relationship
between the intellectuals and the army is shown by the enforced closeness
between Hikmet Benol and Colonel Husamettin Tanbay, a relationship which
involves an absolute absence of dialog. There is always a constant bickering
and deafness, but there is also the need to stand side-by-side. Besides these
dualities, the overall dominant message of the novel is to struggle with and to
make an effort to better oneself. With its dynamic language, strong literary
structure and humour of desperation, Tehlikeli Oyunlar can also be read as a
personal ‘Encyclopaedia of Turkey’ built on the contradictions between
intellectuals and the army, the shanty and the city, individuals and society.

     “Tehlikeli Oyunlar” must be read calmly.
It includes stories that independent of each other. The book tells a person
(Hikmet Benol) is mixed up in an affair. A man who mixed up in pages, two
women; Sevgi and Bilge.

     The book is a insurrection to fake
luminaries in its period. When Hikmet Benol criticizes himself, he castigates
fake good people cynically: “Fakat ülkemizde en çok yeti?en köylüdür. Köylü,
bütün iklimlerde yeti?ir. Köylünün yeti?mesi için çok emek verme?e ihtiyaç
yoktur… Biz köylüleri çok severiz. ?ehre gelirlerse onlardan kap?c? ve amele
yapar?z…” (60)

     In my opinion, it is a confusing book.
Dialogs, monologues, effects, reactions… they are all together. It also has
pessimistic construction. It is hard to understand. The book is like a deep
well and pulls people in itself. But there is a problem; “Tehlikeli Oyunlar”
pulls people in its darkness. It has amazing sentences, oneiromancy and the
most important is words words words. “Çünkü albay?m kelimeler baz? anlamlara
gelmiyor.” “Çünkü albay?m, her dü?ünce mutlu olmuyor.”(160)  “Hay?r, kelimeler aldat?c?yd?; kelimeler, bizi
gerçeklerden uzakla?t?ran küçük tuzaklard?.”(210)

SYNOPSIS

     In “Tehlikeli
Oyunlar”, one of the most important Turkish novel of the 20th Century, O?uz
Atay uses different narrative forms (dialogue, monologue, lettres, poems,
diary…) for to extend their limits of story telling possibilities. The event
takes place in a big city. Hikmet Benol , who studied higher education and 35
years old, tries to obey the rules of environment and wants to play the game by
its rules but he does not achieve this. Then, he divorces his wife and moves to
a shanty. Hikmet tries to write plays with a colonel who meets in there. He
calumniates his failure to other people and their order. He wants to put a
dampener on other people. He always dreams in the shanty and lives a fanciful
life. Plays that are tried to write with colonel, dates back to Hikmet’s old
times. He loves these plays because they are fanciful and he makes whatever he
want in these plays. But his real life, childhood, loves and marriage was
played and they do not repeated anymore. Hikmet commits suicide because of lose
himself in pipe dream. Hikmet Benol chooses acting like play a game when he
investigates reasons of civil disturbance. Actually, “Tehlikeli Oyunlar” is the
same as author’s diaries. So this novel can called an autobiography. Hikmet’s
unintelligibility in hope of intelligibility shows up: suicide. Even if we know
that the author does not commit suicide, these sentence in the novel are
thought-provoking:

“Yazar ölmek
istedi?inde roman?nda birileri kendini asar ayn? sebeplerden.” (352)

“De?il mi albay?m?
Allah belan? versin Hikmet! Peki albay?m.” (75)

CHARACTERS

Hikmet Benol: The main
character of “Tehlikeli Oyunlar”. It is not possible to talk about really only
one Hikmet. There are at least 5 Hikmet. The major specialities are: Hikmet IV;
darling of Bilge. Also, he is king of shandy and scripwriter. After Hikmet II
gets married, he sends into exile a country to Hikmet IV and Hikmet III is sent
to mental world to torture at a distance. Kafka in Hikmet III’s life is
actually Hikmet II. When Hikmet II gets married with Sevgi, he thinks getting
rid of other Hikmet and dismisses them from home and mind. He gives in Sevgi to
gain his personality instead of reign. He quits using alcohol and coins pro se.
There is a picture of Sevgi on a face of coin. After a while, Hikmet IV comes
back to big city and calls dibs on throne. Hikmet I shows up effects of some
religion and psychology books. Other Hikmet think that Hikmet I is dead. Hikmet
I becomes concerned with Bilge to need a mother love. Lustful Hikmet V is
sentenced to writing.

Hüsammetin Tambay: The retired colonel
of “Tehlikeli Oyunlar”. Hiikmet Benol jump off his balcony. So, he is sore. He is
named “albay?m”. The retired colonel Hüsamettin Tambay is neighbor upstairs of
Hikmet Benol. He is not resemble any colonel in real life. Hikmet is like his
son and says about Hüsamettin Tambay: “Albay?m hayatla ilgili her ?eyi
biriktirmi?ti: inan?lmaz bir koleksiyoncuydu. Bütün hayat?n?, sonunda oynayaca??
büyük oyun için biriktirmi?ti. Albay?m, bir hayat koleksiyoncusuydu. Hayat?n?n
hiçbir bölümünü çöp sepetine atmam??t?; bir gün laz?m olur diye bir kö?ede
saklam??t?. Kendisine yaz?lan bütün mektuplar? biriktirmi?ti. Kendi yazd???
mektuplar? da bir süre sonra geri alm??t?. Tan?d?klar?na gider ve ‘mektuplar?m
zaman a??m?na u?rad?, onlar?n üzerindeki hakk?n?z? kaybettiniz,’ derdi. Evet,

Sevgi: She is
illiterate but mother hen. She does not love her father because she does not
gain traction from her father. Then her father and mother divorce. Sevgi lives
her mother but she dies because of illness.  She is wife of Hikmet Benol but then they
divorce. “Olmad?, k?smet de?ilmi? albay?m, mutfak temizli?iyle olmuyormu?.
Uyan?nca boynuma sar?lm??t? uykulu kollar?yla. Ben de bütün i? bundan ibaret
diye sevinmi?tim, tabaklar?n sular? bile akmadan onlar? kurulam??t?m, beni
azarlam??t?, çünkü kurulama bezleri hemen ?slanm??t?, ondan azarlam??t?, beni
bu kadar seven ve ikide bir kollar?n? boynuma saran kad?n neden böyle önemsiz
bir mesele için beni azarlam??t?? ?yi niyetlerle iyi eserler verilemeyece?ini
neden hat?rlatm??t?? Neden neden neden albay?m?”(257)

Bilge: She is cultured
and self-ordained. Hikmet loves Bilge but also he waver between bilge and
Sevgi. He write a letter to Bilge and this letter begin with “Sevgili Bilge”. Hikmet
mention about his feelings with these sentences:” Seni görmek istiyordum
k?sacas?. ?nsan görmekle bile baz? ?eylerin a??rl???na dayanabilir, avunabilir,
hayal kurmaya devam edebilir. Sen anlamazs?n tabii. Anlamak için insan?n baz?
eksik yönleri olmal?.”(140)

     Oguz
Atay’s novel “Tehlikeli Oyunlar” is different from other novels that
cover the suicide theme. There is a huge gap between the process of
enlightenment of his heroes who commit suicide and the processin Turkey. They,
as Turkish intellectuals who approach Western modernist thought, see stead
fastness against the change in their own society. Therefore they began to
criticize the situation they have been by irony. The conflictfinally brings
depression and they commit suicide for ontological reasons. These works in
which reality is discussed by irony in Turkish novel, analyse the suicide theme
by bringing it onto necessaryground in terms of structure and composition. “Bununla birlikte albay?m, her ?eye ra?men

     There is a relationship between O?uz
Atay’s Tehlikeli Oyunlar Dangerous Games and Renaissance literature. During the
Renaissance, folly was a major theme in literature and many writers of the time
had fool characters in their works. In Tehlikeli Oyunlar, O?uz Atay placed its
fool-like character Hikmet Benol in a state where Hikmet seems to shift
continuously between a state of folly and sanity.

     Tehlikeli Oyunlar which is one of the most
important novels of Oguz Atay was written in 1973. The novel that has various
clues about the period it was written comes into prominence with the technique
of game within the game, intertwined time comprehension and the diversity in
narration layers. The narrator of the text prepares different language games
for readers and by doing this s/he enhances vagueness and complexity of the
text. The novel consists of four main parts and eighteen subparts. This partial
structure supports an uncanny atmosphere that can be analyzed with cooperation

CRITICAL
READING

      An
important move of O?uz Atay, in his novel Tehlikeli Oyunlar is his turning
attention to the intellectual questions of Turkey and the dilemma of
institution of authorship through the type of “the disconnected” who is overcome
by his emotional contradictions but also ventures to come to terms with himself
or herself. In the first part of this thesis, in order to reveal the
foundational bases of O?uz Atay’s fictional subjects, I apply to Jean-Gabriel de
Tarde’s understanding of society as the determiner rules of movement of inter –mentalities,
called micro-sociology, instead of Émile Durkheim’s sociology. In that respect,
it is argued that O?uz Atay constructs the subject not as the representative of
the given discourses and ideologies produced in accordance with ready
formulations, convictions, and abstractions but rather as social types with a
potential of intentional emotionality. I employ the tools of psychoanalytical
method developed by Jacques Lacan to analyse the question of meaning and
representation of the subject and language.

     Tehlikeli Oyunlar includes many monologue
and criticism like author’s other novels. Actually, this monologues are a
matter of in O?uz Atay’s novels, not a ordinary fiction. Hikmet, the major
character of novel, queries life, also kidding with it and gets desperate about
life. The novel is sometimes schizophrenic, sometimes humorous, always internal
feud. Also, in this novel, author’s novels take part. Each reader infers
different meaning from the novel. It’s reason that the novel has eidetic and
humorous image. The major character of novel, Hikmet, commits suicide because
of existential crisis.
