Street smarts are something everyone should have going out into the real world. But some people do better with street smarts rather than actual books smarts. According to this essay that I have read it tells the importance it is to teach intellectualism to people who have not noticed what it was before. The essay is “Hidden Intellectualism” by Gerald Graff. This essay is rather intriguing and relatable. I believe this story is mostly relatable because I would spend my time thinking I would never use what I learn in school in the outside world. I believed street smarts where better than book smarts.
The title “Hidden Intellectualism” is a very smart title for his essay because it is uncovering the hidden message of book smarts. The essay was adapted from his 2003 book “Clueless in the Academe”. The title I believe is rather strong because it is rather intriguing because some people do not know what the word intellectualism and it being something that’s hidden could draw people in because it might relate to them.
The writer claims that street smarts indeed have parts of books smarts. Graff explains that in many cases, book smarts can take various forms in what people call street smarts. “Street smarts” is the term used for knowledge necessary to deal with the urban environment around you” but the “street smarts” aren’t very helpful in an academic learning environment. While on the other hand “book smarts” are what we learn every day in our academic environment. But it’s not always very helpful when we leave that environment. It turns out that book smarts are actually hidden inside of street smarts in many forms.
The supporting evidence is mostly from Mr. Graff personal life as a kid. He tells of how he would debate with his fellow classmates about sports and who was the strongest in the school. We mostly saw his side of the story at all times which was the tone of the story. There weren’t any pie charts, graphs, studies, or surveys.
The writer is mostly using his own story so we are going off of his word. He is believing that the story of his past is strong enough to impact you. This position is held for the majority of the story. There is nothing that we can make sure that he is telling the truth about his past but we still have to believe what he says. We cannot tell if the story is credible or not credible but we can believe the more informative parts backed up with research. Gerald Graff is a professor who teaches English at the Education of University of Illinois at Chicago. He has a B.A and a Ph.D in English and American Literature. It was motioned that he was the President of the Modern Language Association.
