is one of the most essentials in developing a country. The growth of the world’s economy is placing a huge demand of energy.
The major source of the world’s energy supply has been fossil fuels such as
coal, natural gas, and oil. However, these energy sources are non-renewable
sources of energy. Problem encountered by other energy sources includes
environmental hazard due to climate changes caused by mining and processing
fossil fuels, issue of scalability and timing, it must be supplied in the time
frame needed, in the quantity needed, and at an affordable and reasonable cost,
foreign energy dependence, energy availability to state a few. Governments,
businesses, researchers and consumers are increasingly supporting the
development of alternative energy sources and new technologies for power
generation. Renewable energy sources such as solar power generation have
emerged as potential alternatives which address some of these concerns.
Solar energy has been chosen by developing
countries (African countries) as a source of alternative energy, because it is
the most readily available since the whole world receive solar radiation even
if it is in varying level of intensity and hours of daily sunshine. Solar
energy have so many benefits, Solar power production generates electricity with
a limited impact on the environment as compared to other forms of electricity
production, reduction in the depletion of natural resources, provides green and
cheap electricity, to state a few. In a developing country like Nigeria which
is fortunate to be situated in Sub-Saharan Africa, a region described by the
International Council for Science as having the world’s best solar resource.
Nigeria has 485.1million MWh/day of solar energy in natural units and we enjoy
an average of 6.2 hours of daily sunshine, it is advisable that it adopts solar
power generation nationwide to solve its power problem. Today, with advancement
of technologies the cost of renewable energy equipment is reducing globally,
encouraging large scale solar photovoltaic installations. Solar energy is inexhaustible, available,
abundant in nature and free from pollution.
