Along with this, Jin
and Shepherd 2005 highlighted the significance of the inclusion of satellite
based urban observations into the climate models. They explained that even the
availability of datasets corresponding to variables like skin temperature,
albedo and surface emissivity (Jin and Liang 2004, Myneni et al. 2002, Schaff
et al. 2002) without including the necessary changes corresponding to the urban
landscape does not provide good estimates of the weather forecasts by
land-atmosphere coupled models. They concluded that due to the significant
impact of the UHI effect on skin temperatures (and a positive feedback loop connecting
the two), the radiative transfer equation gets imbalanced and this needs to be
accounted for by considering the “urban heat flux” in it.
