I took this course because I am majoring as an
electrical engineer in hopes of specializing in renewable energy production. I
told my academic advisor about my aspirations and he recommended this class to
me since it would expose me to the topic of renewable energy. The class also fulfills
my Technology and Society requirement and is convenient since it is online.

2.      
I expect to learn about the impact that fossil fuels
and renewable energy has on the environment and on society. More specifically,
how our sources of energy affect our energy and land usage and how they can be
improved upon in terms of efficiencies in conversion. I also expect to learn
how I positively impact global energy issues since it is a topic of concern in the
world.

As fossil fuel infrastructure retires, renewables
are the dominant choice in new infrastructure that were built in 2017. With a
net total of new energy generation being 16.7GW, renewables accounted for 94.7%
of that capacity. Yet, when combined with other new fossil fuel infrastructure
being built on a utility scale, renewables only made up 49.2% of the electricity
generating capacity. Back in 2016, 27 GW of new utility scale infrastructure
was built with renewables accounting for 62% of that generation. According to
the article, carbon dioxide emissions were lowered by 1%, yet this is lower
than the average of 1.6% reduction of emissions per year from 2005 – 2016. It’s
interesting to note that in March of 2017, solar and wind electricity combined
accounted for 10% of the electricity usage in the USA. The publisher of the
article then goes on to explain that new solar power generation is down, with 14.5
GW being built in 2016 and 11 GW built in 2017.
